Homer to Hip Hop: A People’s History of Spoken Word

Pen-Ting Presents

Continuing their mission to bring you the freshest poetry and most enticing performers, Pen-Ting are hosting spoken word poet and author, Pete ‘The Temp’ Bearder, for an evening of discussion, performance and presentation on ‘The Spoken Word Renaissance’.

Special guests TBA. The £10 ticket includes a copy of the book.

Stage Invasion (The Spoken Word Renaissance) is a groundbreaking new book which explores the unwritten history, science and skill of spoken word and answers some strangely under-explored questions: What is the history of performance poetry in the UK? How does emotional contagion happen in live literature? What has spoken word got to do with hypnotism and ecstatic states?

This crucial and highly accessible book explores a thriving ecology of artistry, and how it can serve us for cultural, social and political renewal. The talk will also cover themes of protest, punk movements, the influence of Hip Hop, the crucial role of a live audience, and the radical history of spoken word.
